The day’s celebrations begun with an address by the principal of the school, Mrs. Meenakshi Bahadur, who blessed the school with her kind words and gave an insight into the origin of the UN’s principle event which was first conducted in 1974. Later, the science department took charge of the day’s proceedings with the HOD of the science department, Anuradha aunty giving an introductory speech about the vitality of nature and humankind’s dependence on it for survival.
The day was carried forward by Anjaneya Raj Garg, a student of class 12, who anchored the entire show. An eye opening adorned the stage to begin the presentations of the students. Aniruddha Khare, a student of class 12th, provided an outlook into the history of the World Environment Day, and recited the Earth Anthem by Abhay Kumar who was India’s 21st Ambassador to Madagascar. After the anthem, students from class 7 presented their artistic flair and artworks portraying the Chipko movement, the anti Tehri Dam movement, a poster on how humans are blind towards the damage we have caused to our ecosystem. This presentation ended with an artwork describing the importance of water and the increased usage of water-conserving methods such as rain water harvesting.
After the well thought of posters, students of class 7th presented a Jungle Story through a self- animated video which talked about the animals and ecosystem of a jungle which highlighted the value of forests as ecosystems and jungles and green cover as the lungs of the cosmic blue pearl. Subsequently, the children of class 7th presented a skit titled the Plantorium, a plant school. This skit showcased the children in different roles displaying the types of plants such as parasites, autotrophs, heterotrophs. This comedic skit sure provided knowledge in a captivating way.
Next, the children of standard 9th presented a rendition of Bruno Mars’ Count on Me which was titled “Count on Trees”. The self composed lyrics along with the melody of guitars and a synthesizer brought about a joyful feeling towards the oxygen providers. The song conveyed the message that you can always count on trees to be your savior. After the song, the students of class 9-12, presented a PowerPoint presentation about the school’s collaboration on the international level with a project named, “Phone Call to the World”. This project under the banner of the British Council has brought countries like South Africa, UK and now India under a single initiative aimed at fighting the climate crisis. After the presentation, Trishita of class 6th presented a self composed English poem bringing out the importance of ecosystems and a healthy environment.
After the poem, the students of class 11th presented a video presentation involving animation, initiatives and a poem about how we at ground level can contribute to the restoration of the environment. The video presented a few statistics about how the environment suffered because of humans and also provided solutions in the form of processes such as environment restoration. The video also showed healthy practices through which all of us can contribute to thriving biodiversity. A self composed poem also told us the consequences of not restoring the ecological balance of nature. Towards the end of the program, Zoha Aseem of class 10th took a pledge with the school to save the environment and contribute to environmental restoration.
With the closing note of the Vice Principal, Mrs. Meenakshi Shah, the program ended leaving all of us with a sense of wanting to do something and planting the seed of the vital thought of environmental restoration.
